The accolades go on. And on…
If you come across this at your local wine shop, it’ll cost you a lot. Online, it’s listed at a select few in the $100-160 range.
Or. hear us out…you can lock it down from us for an earth shattering $79 today!
Seriously. Every vintage hits in the 95-99 range. This one? A solid 97, a 96, and a couple 95s.
Every review shares a similar thought. Words like “ample”, “rich”, “powerful”, and “full-bodied” run through them.
This wine’s impeccable track record goes back to the inaugural 1999. It goes toe-to-toe with the very best Tuscans, priced wildly less than your Sassicaia, Ornellaia, etc. Wine Spectator acknowledges it, “using Bordeaux grapes and new-school winemaking techniques, Le Macchiole, Argentiera, Ornellaia and Antinori showed how this coastal region has become world-class for wines that marry almost New World character with savory and wild herb notes strongly rooted in Tuscany.”
The value here is IMMENSE. Other 2020 supers in this league - ones with the “-aia” names - they fall in the $200-$300+ range. And this stands right up there with everyone. Even at full price. At roughly half off, lovers of Tuscan wine need to lock it down, pronto.
Elaborating on the greatness here James Suckling says “Located in the famous Bolgheri district on Tuscany’s coastline, Argentiera is neighbored by some of Italy’s most famous wineries: Guado al Tasso, Ornellaia, and Sassicaia. The prime location is complemented by a world-class team led by Federico Zileri, the vineyard manager, and Stephane Derenoncourt, the famous Bordeaux consulting oenologist… the Bolgheri Superiore is always rich and silky, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, always with a harmonious, soulful nature.”
Indeed elegant, graceful, intense, and finessed, a thoroughbred reminiscent of First Growth Bordeaux, only with that unmistakable super-Tuscan breadth, only the best terroirs in Bolgheri can achieve. Layer upon layer of savory and delectable sensuality that leaves you yearning for more with each sip.
Too bad we have this one small batch while it lasts!
97 Points – Fallstaff
“Bright, rich ruby red with a subtle purple reflection. Expressive and fragrant nose of rich wild berries, ripe cherries and a touch of dark chocolate, plus fine floral components, precious wood and light spice. Great texture on the palate and tightly woven tannins, very powerful, pure and clear, very long, still young.”
96 Points – James Suckling
“Rich aromas of currants and plums with chocolate and walnut undertones. Full-bodied and chewy with layers of tannins. It’s a big wine and very juicy with a polished and long finish. Needs five to six years to soften. Best after 2027.”
95 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“It is no exaggeration to say this is truly one of the most beautiful and picturesque estates in the world, with panoramic views cascading to the ocean, and I highly recommend a visit. Situated in the southern corner of Bolgheri, the wines are built around the 83 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon they have planted exclusively within the DOC. The 2020 Argentiera displays a fully saturated red hue and reveals some blue fruits that starting to shine through in the glass, along with notes of boysenberry, dark chocolate, graphite, and pine sap. Ample and full-bodied, with ripe tannins, it takes on a more savory and herbal profile with notes of espresso and grilled rosemary on the palate and has a long finish. Ample and seriously styled, it would be phenomenal with Bistecca Fiorentina and lamb. Drink 2025-2045.”
95 Points – Wine Spectator
“A dark, brooding red, yet also smooth and complex, revealing black currant, blackberry, plum, loam and sweet spice flavors. Beautifully balanced and fluid, with a long, detailed aftertaste that flexes the tannins. Impressive. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. 850 cases imported. Drink now through 2040.”
