California: Mount Veeder (Napa)
All five barrels
When we find a hidden gem winery that we really love, you can bet that we’ll feature them as often as we can. Today’s winery, Random Ridge, was discovered by Agent Red in late 2007. Since then, we’ve showcased Random Ridge more than a dozen times and we’ve developed quite a loyal following for Bill Hawley’s wines. Every time we feature one, it sells very swiftly. Bill grows his grapes atop Mount Veeder, on his estate vineyard, shown below… covered in a layer of very rare snowfall. As you can see from the photo and from his label design, Bill is eclectic. We wouldn’t have him any other way.
Today’s 2008 Random Ridge Cabernets is an amazing blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc. This very highly recommended wine is truly fantastic, delivering a drinking experience that is out of this world.
With only five barrels produced, you’ll want to purchase your case very soon.
Dark and very pretty with deep and inky hues of darkest garnet. At the heart, the wine appears nearly black.
On opening, this wine exudes plenty of fruit, spice and earth, all in wonderful balance. Rich fruit of black plum, black currant, boysenberry compote and black cherry mingle with sweet spice, baker’s chocolate and pencil shavings.
Lush and juicy fruits present up front, punctuated at the end by a wonderful earthiness. Black cherry, black currant and stewed plum sit atop chocoloate-covered espresso bean, dried fall leaves, raisined Cabernet berry and softly smoky cherry.
Rich, elegant and extended. The wine leads with a mouthful of complex fruit and ends with a lovely earthiness with spice and leather.
A wine braised pot roast with rosemary, garlic and black pepper.
What the Winery Says
A perfect growing season at Random Ridge with extended hang time led to a leisurely and bountiful harvest of luscious ripe fruit. This bodacious barrel-select reserve wine is dark, extracted, and generous in flavors of plum, spice, licorice, cocoa, cedar, and red currants.

About the Winery
Random Ridge produces fine wines from vineyards pioneered by the Hawley family in the Mayacamas mountains of Napa County, California. We also write poetry, surf, and practice sustainable agriculture.
Random Ridge produces wines in very limited quantities from vines meticulously maintained to reflect the essence of the soils in which they grow. We are farmers first but will surf anytime anywhere. Our dedication in the vineyards naturally segues into traditional winemaking practices in the cellar. We strive to enable the fruit to develop its inherent Buddha nature to become wine of complexity harmony & passion.
Winegrower/poet/surfer Bill Hawley began to pioneer Random Ridge in 1980. At the end of a remote fire road at 2200 feet on California’s stunning Mount Veeder, he built a house for his young family with recycled lumber. The next year he cleared and planted a 10-acre vineyard right on the Napa-Sonoma County ridgeline. Today from the home and vineyard the views of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay still dazzle the southern horizon and the sun sets over Sonoma Mountain. The vineyard’s intense fruit now yields a limited production of exceptional wines that are spicy, extracted, and rich: “wines with alti-dude.”
