Jaume Serra Cristalino
2009 Brut Nature Vintage
Spain: Cava & Penedes
You may know Jaume Serra’s budget-minded Cristalino Cava, but did you know that they have a distinctly better upmarket vintage bubbly? They do, dear Operative, and we are thrilled to be able to offer it to you - at a price that makes this wine a screaming deal.
This delightfully bubbly Cava is 2009 vintage, which means that it underwent extended aging before being released to the general public. Today’s Jaume Serra Cristalino 2009 Brut Nature Vintage was produced by Spain’s leading producer of fine Cava. They are best known for their lower-priced Cava offerings but, in our opinion, it is their vintage Cava that really delivers.
This wine is light and refreshing, but it possesses more character and complexity than any Cava we’ve showcased. This Spanish sparkler is moderately effervescent, with its tiny bubbles giving the wine a very elegant feel on the palate.

Energetic and effervescent on pouring. After a moment, the wine shows a gentle and continuous upward cascade of tiny bubbles through the lovely golden hues of the wine.
Begins with wonderful, succulent notes of fresh fruit, highlighted by white pear, peach and lemon zest. Underlying these are subdued hints of vanilla, clove spice and a touch of leesiness.
Light and refreshing with a playful elegance. Flavors which closely mimic the nose are transported by the fine bubbles to the far corners of the palate. As the wine warms just a little, additional flavors of toasted almond and brioche make a lovely and welcome appearance.
A refreshingly soft and airy mouthfeel, with elegant bubbles that lead to a moderately long-lasting finish.
We would recommend pairing this refreshing sparkling wine with a fresh seafood salad of mussels, sea scallops, and shrimp served with a dijon vinaigrette and a touch of lemon.
What the Winery Says
This fine Spanish sparkling wine is made using the Traditional Method, in which the secondary fermentation producing a sparkling wine’s bubbles occurs in the bottle. Patiently aged 30 months on the yeast lees prior to release, it’s round and rich with lovely lime, grapefruit and lemon flavors, crisp acidity and a bone-dry, toasty finish. Enjoy it on its own and with rich seafood dishes.
By law, Cava must be made in the traditional method in which the secondary fermentation takes place in the same bottle in which the sparkling wine is sold. There is an added requirement that Cavas must age for a minimum of nine months on the lees before release. After conducting extensive research, the winery has isolated the ideal yeast which helps to impart the finest quality and an elegant mouth-feel to our Cavas.

About the Winery
Jaume Serra was founded in 1943 by distinguished enologist Jaume Serra Guell. It is located in the Garraf subdivision of the Denominacion de Origen Penedés, the largest wine growing area in Catalonia. The winery is situated on the 300-acre El Padruel estate and shares the landscape with the famous 17th-century fortress of the same name in the Mediterranean coastal town of Vilanova y la Geltru, some 50 kilometers south of Barcelona. Over the years, the fortress on the estate has played an historical role in navigating the Mediterranean Sea as well as in the Spanish civil war.
