Mission Briefing

First Class

Today’s wine was a smash hit with our recent tasting panel. At least once a week we convene a panel that consists of our own in-house Agents (led by Agent Red) and a cadre of wine industry mavens from the far corners of the trade. Winemakers, cellar rats, professional sommeliers, and more contribute their expertise and opinions. Together, we carefully evaluate and review the wines that we select for you. About one third of the wines presented are rejected by the panel, ensuring that the wines that we feature are fantastic.

Today’s Phipps Family Cellars 2009 Treborce Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel is fantastic! This wine is classic Dry Creek Zin, demonstrating the sort of richness and extraction that is characteristic of the region.

We’ll be warming our cores with this wine for the rest of the winter, but we’ll also be squirreling some away for spring and summer barbecues!

Tasting Profile

A beautiful, deep, slightly translucent burgundy at its heart; continually flows into a slightly lighter ruby at its edge.

Big, fruity, classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, with a dark fruit compote of blackberry, boysenberry, and black currant balanced against sweet cedar wood, dried fallen leaves, clove, sage and thyme.

This leads right off the bat with concentrated, lush fruit notes of stewed black cherry and mulberry, with these strong fruity flavors laid overtop more earthy and herbal notes of unsweetened cola, espresso bean, cocoa powder, freshly cracked black peppercorn, nutmeg, and a touch of herbal tea.

A perfect example of a Dry Creek Valley Zin, with an exceedingly long, pleasant, and complex finish highlighted by concentrated dark fruit. Just a touch of spice at the very end.

We would recommend pairing this with a classic meal of a wild mushroom risotto, dusted with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

What the Winery Says

The Phipps Family Cellars 2009 Treborce Vineyard Zinfandel is the newest release of our most popular wine as well as our only 100% varietal Zinfandel. PFC handcrafts its Zinfandels in a big & bold style like the great Cabernets of the Napa Valley. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Treborce Vineyard that is perched at 800’ high atop the eastern hillside in Dry Creek Valley. The Treborce Vineyard produces “Classic Zinfandel” with a distinct core of blackberry, freshly ground white pepper, and a nose of dried herbs and flowers. This Zinfandel is further characterized by Spanish cherries, dark raspberry, and boysenberry fruit that mingle with vanilla, anise, cinnamon, dark chocolate, toasty oak, sweet coconut, and allspice.

94 Point Review - Wine Enthusiast Review (Previous Vintage) A beautiful Zinfandel that shows the elegant balance of a fine Cabernet Sauvignon, but with Zin’s exuberant personality. It’s powerful in wild blackberry, black raspberry, and mulberry fruit, with cola, mocha, and chamomile notes liberally accented with crushed black pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon spice. Finishes complex, long, and absolutely dry. Really defines Dry Creek Zin at its best.
