Mission Briefing

Codename:

Vee-on-YAY!

Today’s Curtis Winery 2012 Santa Ynez Valley Estate Viognier comes to us from one of our favorite recently discovered winemakers, Ernst Storm. After tasting his Chardonnay recently, we are thrilled to offer another of his exceptional white wines.

This wine is layered and quite complex for a Viognier, very much crafted in the French style. By this, we mean that the herbal and terroir flavor components are given equal footing to the sweeter fruit aspects, and in our opinion, this wine is much the better for it. Elegant notes of white peach, apricot, and lime are balanced by hints of fennel leaf and jasmine, resulting in a wine that is at home both sipped on the porch and paired with a hearty meal. Many on our tasting panel couldn’t wait to pair this wine, well-chilled (of course), with a summer afternoon by the pool.

At over 25% off, you aren’t likely to find such a fantastic Viognier at this budget friendly price very often. Be sure to stock up for summer!

Tasting Profile

Look:

A super pale, almost straw yellow throughout the glass.

Smell:

Lovely and aromatic, with fresh fruit notes of Meyer lemon, white peach, and lime zest, accompanied by white flower petals, honeysuckle, and fennel leaf.

Taste:

More French in manner on the flavor profile, with just-ripened Kaffir lime, white peach, apricot, and rose petal balanced by a strong herbal component of fennel leaf and jasmine.

Finish:

Very reserved and elegant on the finish, with a lovely tart, crisp acidity that would be perfectly placed on a warm summer day.

Pairing:

A simple chicken liver pate, served with crackers, jam and sea salt.

What the Winery Says

Our aim is to produce a Viognier that honors the varietal’s rich, floral character while showcasing a clean structure that is reflective of our estate vineyard. The 2012 vintage greets the nose with abundant aromas of fresh citrus, stone fruit, jasmine and honeycomb. A beautifully weighted palate offers lush, viscous flavors of peach, apricot, pear and lime zest. Sleek, steely acidity brings crisp balance to the finish.

The two estate Viognier blocks were harvested on September 17 and September 26 as each reached peak maturity. The growing season was warm but not hot, allowing the fruit to achieve full ripeness at lower sugars for excellent balance. The juice was cold fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and aromatic complexity. After fermentation, 50 percent of the wine was racked to a French oak tank, where it aged for six months on the lees to gain enhanced mouthfeel and texture.

About the Winery

We live for Rhônes. Why Rhônes? Because they are an alternative to the beaten path. Because they are delicious as well as different. And because they are so perfectly suited to the Santa Ynez Valley, the sun-drenched, fog-kissed place that we call home.

Here, we put down roots as one of California’s first wineries dedicated exclusively to Rhône-style wines. Since then, nothing has changed. We still live for Rhônes.

Our specialties are Syrah, Grenache, Viognier and Roussanne, which we complement with a trio of lively blends. Under the guidance of Winegrower Chuck “Calypso” Carlson and Winemaker Ernst Storm, we craft our wines in a fruit-forward style, with an emphasis on capturing the pure natural flavors of the vineyard and the vintage.

We invite you to uncork our wine or visit our tasting room to discover the Rhône difference for yourself.
