Mission Briefing

Codename:

For your protection

Today’s 2011 Heintz Vineyards Chardonnay marks the TWS debut for Von Holt Wines. Today’s winery is a passion project of owner Chris Von Holt, who spent a career protecting U.S. dignitaries in the Secret Service.

Today’s wine is sourced from, in our opinion, the top vineyard along the Sonoma Coast. A growing list of 90+ Point wines are sourced from Heintz Vineyard, including Radio Coteau, Williams-Selyem, Flowers, and today’s Chardonnay from Von Holt Wines, which earned 91 Points from Wine Enthusiast.

Bold notes of Meyer lemon and creamy vanilla bean, paired with an enticing pop of acidity, make today’s wine a perfect companion to the warm summer days ahead. Be sure to stock up!

Tasting Profile

Look:

Sunshine yellow with viscous glints along the edges of the glass. If the bottle is a touch too cold, you might see slight sediment in the glass - this isn’t a bad thing! This is a sign of unfined and unfiltered high-end Chardonnay, with wines like Kistler’s Chardonnay experiencing the same thing.

Smell:

A really aromatic nose, with fresh flavors leaping from the glass. Meyer lemon, white peach, and green apple are framed by lime zest, orange oil, vanilla bean, a touch of oak, and white flower petal.

Taste:

Bold but not overstated flavors of Meyer lemon, sweet vanilla bean, and creamy exotic fruits create a well balanced and jam-packed flavor profile. These are joined by hints of buttery brioche, pleasant toasted oak, and a subtle echo of caramel.

Finish:

With a pleasant tartness and bite of acidity, today’s wine is a perfect companion to an afternoon in the sun.

Pairing:

A prosciutto, basil, and truffle oil flatbread.

What the Winery Says

In a year when many Sonoma growers lost 40-50 percent of their Chardonnay crop due to heavy October rains, we were able to secure some of the Heintz family’s best fruit. Once safely in our San Francisco winery, winemaker John Fones was able to craft a 91-point wine.

2011 was a year of high-acidity, low alcohol Chardonnays. The 2011 Von Holt Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay marries freshness with intense flavors reminiscent of lemon curd, marzipan and vanilla bean.

91 Point Review - Wine Enthusiast Integrating the buttered toast and caramel notes of new oak with the underlying wine, this is is a Chardonnay of classy California dimensions. Despite a cool vintage, the grapes achieved remarkable ripeness, with flavors suggesting oranges and spicy, creamy papayas, while bright acidity gives it all a wakeup call of zest.

About the Winery

When Chris and I decided to launch Von Holt Wines, our all-consuming desire was to locate vineyards that produced grapes with singular personalities. Making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were not enough; we wanted our wines to be as unique as the heads of state Chris spent his life protecting as a Secret Service agent (and to taste as good as the wines these heads of state enjoyed on Chris’s watch).
