2019 may just steal the show as the vintage of the decade for Pinot Noir in Napa. Time will tell, but as I’m writing these tasting notes, I am astonished by the early development and elegance of this vintage every time I uncork a bottle. Although the 2019 vintage has the structure to last years in the cellar, its freshness makes it a wine for today’s occasion.

Truchard vineyard is the most Northeastern vineyard in Carneros, right on the foothills of Mount Veeder and Mayacamas mountains. Made up of nearly 400 acres, the vineyard has a unique topography consisting of rolling hills, steep ravines, and numerous valleys. Pinot Noir is planted on the eastern facing of the vineyard for morning sun and shade from the intense afternoon sun. The farming is organic (Napa Green Certified Land).

The crafting of Batch #35 started in the vineyard, to walk the line between a Grand Cru Burgundian Pinot Noir and a Californian one. Evocative aromas of black cherries, rhubarb, black tea, and pomegranate. The flavor spectrum is wide, ranging from black compote, fresh violet, toasty oak, and exotic sweet spice that weave seamlessly together into a voluptuous finish. This wine will continue to develop savory and complex flavors if given time in a decanter or in the cellar.
