THE VINEYARDS: Our historic Gambogi Ranch was planted in 1909 by Annchise Gambogi. Our family has farmed these grapes since 1973. These head pruned, dry farmed grapes are low yielding but consistently produce a wine that is filled with a sense of terroir and history.
2017 GROWING SEASON: Coming off one of the wettest winters on record, the 2017 growing season soon normalized with bud break occurring later than that of the drought years. Throughout summer we saw numerous heat waves that sped the maturation of the vines while a cooler August allowed this zinfandel to ripen more slowly and evenly leading up to the pick.
THE WINEMAKING: We fermented our Zinfandel in open-top tanks and “punched-down” the skins by hand to extract the dark violet color and express the rich qualities this fruit has to offer. After being pressed, the wine was aged in American and European Oak barrels for approximately 16 months.
THE WINE: The 2017 Gambogi has an impenetrable deep red color complimenting an expressive nose of dried strawberry, almond oil, and light thyme and sage. The rich fruit driven palate is balanced from start to finish with notes of sweet cherry, integrated clove, black licorice and white pepper.
