The 2020 vintage rises with resiliency in the face of a tumultuous year. California experienced an unseasonably warm, dry winter that set the stage for an early bud break and below average rainfall. Spring rains during bloom brought crop yields down and fostered small berry size and helped restore necessary soil moisture. Consistently warm days and cool evenings throughout the growing season set the stage for ideal even ripening through veraison. In spite of the formidable challenges Mother Nature delivered late in the season, the harvest proceeded apace as the grapes ripened quickly and were safely harvested. Highly thorough vetting of the grapes whittled the vintage down to a teeny size overall but one of stellar quality. The small berry and crop size delivered remarkable fruit intensity while the late season heat burned off excessive acid providing a perfect phenolic balance. Though far fewer bottles, the wines are simply remarkable both in their scarcity and excellent quality. As always, we harvested in the early morning hours during the coolest part of the day to preserve flavor and balance. Grapes were hand-sorted and gently de stemmed, then tank fermented and barrel-aged for 11 months in neutral French oak barrels, with a small portion in new barrels from select coopers.

Shimmering gold in the glass with bright aromas of stone fruits, including peach and apricot, layer with white flowers, juicy melon, and undertones of wet stone minerality. Weighty and round, this medium-bodied wine offers generous flavors of Asian pear, green apple, and citrus notes of lemon zest and fresh meringue. Vibrant acidity offers a lingering mineral-driven finish.

Creamy and mild soft cheeses; try room-temperature Brie and Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam Triple Crème. For seafood pairings; mussels and frites in a light white wine sauce, butter-poached lobster, pan-seared halibut, and herbed crabcakes. Crispy-skin roasted chicken with simple seasoning and ricotta-filled ravioli in cream sauce are beautiful pairings to this classic chardonnay.
