The Estate Coastlands Vineyard is planted into three distinct blocks: Diane Cobb, Old Firs and the 1906 Block. The Old Firs block was planted in the same year as Diane Cobb in 1989. Where the Diane Cobb block was own-rooted, Ross and his family planted thirty-four rows of Martini Clone 15, and ten rows each of Martini Clone 13 and the Swiss Clone Wädenswil 2A to commercial root stock. Amazingly, the Martini 15 was planted to the phylloxera addled AXR-1 rootstock and is healthy as can be over thirty years later. Similar to the Diane Cobb block, Old Firs hasn’t been irrigated in over 20 years and receives zero fertilizer.
