Figurine is Sculpterra’s most popular and most awarded blend to date! The true genius in this wine comes from combining the fruitiness of Primitivo with the herbs of Cabernet Sauvignon, all rounded off with the finesse of Merlot.
This wine is 100% estate grown and bottled; all grapes were grown on the Frankel Family Estate. Primitivo is grown on the 8-acre Ridgeline plot, featuring steep slopes, well-drained soils, and low-yielding crops. Cabernet Sauvignon is taken from two vineyards “Bomba Vieja” and “Autopista.” These Cabernet vineyards are extremes of one another; one from the highest elevated peak on Frankel Vineyards and the other on the lowest valley floor vineyard location. Finally, Merlot is cultivated above the sculpture garden on the Hillside. 2022 was by far the most challenging growing season in recent memory. Record breaking heat sped up the harvest, and we picked three weeks earlier than anticipated. These grapes were hand and machine picked overnight and fermented cold at our onsite winery.
All grapes were destemmed, fermented, pressed, racked, and barreled at Sculpterra Winery. These four lots were kept separate until the week of bottling. We elected to do both barrel and tank fermentation. Barrel fermentation traps the wine’s color and gives it structure, tannins, and grip. We only press to 1.5 bars, keeping the delicate aromas present in the young wine. Primitivo was aged exclusively in 500L oak barrels; these large format barrels are great for fruit-focused wine because there is more surface area than wood. The Bomba Vieja-Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in 100% New American 225L Oak barrels. These barrels add roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and cedar notes. Merlot was aged in 300L Hogshead used French Oak barrels which added subtle notes of vanilla and spice. The blend was racked together from barrel to tank one week prior to bottling.
What’s not to like about this wine, it has it all! For starters, it shows off strawberry, black pepper, licorice, and crushed rock aromas. The mouthfeel is held together by chalky tannins that leave the palate lengthy yet soft. This blend is complex yet refined and a great example of a Paso Robles blend done right. The palate bursts with dark raspberry alongside rosemary, sage, and oregano as a smoky, oaky tension floats in the background. Dark fruit aromas of blueberry push against floral notes. The new oak is very well integrated, adding vanilla, marshmallow, and campfire bouquets. The soft palate is well integrated, making this wine VERY cellar worthy. The best years are still to come, reaching its peak between 2026 through 2031
