The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® BOCKSTEIN falls with an incline of 38 to 80 percent into a side valley of the Saar. Like an amphitheater, it encloses the town of Ockfen. Their stony, gritty soils are characterized by skeletal Devonian slate and weathered greywacke soils - which, with their dark color, store the sun’s warmth during the day from the south to south-west oriented location. This is joined in places by quartzitic sandstone and some yellowish fine earth. The forested mountain ridge protects against fall winds. History: There are indications that wine was already being cultivated in this location in Roman times. Where the name Bockstein comes from is unclear. The more fantastic interpretation refers to the billy goat as a symbol of procreative power (Dionysus cult). At the same time billy goats developed a destructive power in vineyards and were therefore sacrificed. The second, more realistic, goes back to a hunter named “Baron von Bock”, whose residence is said to have been a group of rocks on the ridge: “the buck his stone”.
