Since 1998, we’ve learned and understood Ribera del Duero in a different way.
We felt that the true Ribera del Duero needed to look back to the past. We’re committed to recovering villages with a long winemaking tradition and replanting them to their full potential.
From the northern area of Sotillo de la Ribera with its limestone slopes to the reddish mountains of Pardilla in the south, we chose five villages whose different soils and landscapes we sensed would create a unique Ribera del Duero.
Our vineyards are also a faithful reflection of a forgotten Ribera del Duero. We’ve reproduced ancient planting densities, grafted all the rare varieties we found in the old vineyards we purchased, and trained all our plots in bush vines, as has always been done here.
In the end, the result is an interesting mosaic of smallholdings that offers us the elements to showcase the authentic character of Ribera del Duero, a cultured wine.
Today, Matallana boasts 21.5 hectares of its own vineyards, spread across five villages (Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos, and Pardilla) and 11 districts. These vineyards guarantee the purity of our wines.
