Baumard owns a significant portion (~15 acres) of the steep, terraced hillside vineyards in the small 110-acre Quarts de Chaume appellation (elevated to Grand Cru in 2011). Soils include schist, quartz, rhyolite, spilite, and limestone mixed with quartz. Vines average ~35 years old, low yields (20 hl/ha). Southeastern exposure above the Layon river favors perfect ripening and botrytis development.
Nearly perfect vintage avoiding spring frosts. Mild summer and warm autumn produced perfectly ripe fruit with moderate alcohol, juicy acidity, and dense concentration. Young wines benefit from time in bottle or quick decant. Intensely floral with ripe citrus, pear, orchard fruits, and minerality. Opulent density on the palate yet lifted and fresh. Vibrant, youthful with white flowers, citrus blossoms, jasmine, honeyed apple; balanced honey and ethereal acidity.
