RunRig is produced from six distinguished old-vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley, with some plantings exceeding 170 years of age. Shiraz from these old dry-grown vineyards is co-fermented with a small proportion of Viognier, drawing comparison with the beautifully fragrant and tautly structured wines from the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône’s Côte-Rôtie. Each parcel is hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented separately in traditional open-top fermenters before basket pressing. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve purity and site expression.
2020 was a difficult season to manage for both grower and winemaker, with yields much lower than anticipated. Strong winds at flowering reduced berry and bunch count in many vineyards, followed by a dry winter and spring, very hot and dry December and January, and three major frosts — resulting in an earlier and much smaller harvest than average. Older vineyards with deeper roots remained steadfast under these conditions and produced small volumes of deeply concentrated wines from the lower yields.
