Reserve 2022 handed Napa a real test: a sharp, statewide heat spike hit the valley in the first week of September, right in the thick of the growing season. Up at 2,200 feet, above the fog line, elevation works in our favor when weather turns extreme, the mountain sites see cooler nights than the valley floor, and that gap matters most in a vintage like this one. The fruit came in hand-harvested, by family and friends, the same way it always has on this ridge.

Co-fermented rather than blended after the fact: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon carrying the wine with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec through the tank together from day one. From there into French oak barriques, 50% new, for the 2022 Reserve.

Deep garnet in the glass. Blackberry, cassis and dark chocolate lead, framed by baking spice, dried herb and a streak of mountain minerality. Full-bodied and structured, with firm, grippy tannin and the weight you’d expect from a warm mountain vintage. Long, savory finish with a cedary close.
