Random Ridge Winery is owned by poet, surfer and winemaker Bill Hawley, who has farmed his 47-acre property above 2,200 feet on the Mayacamas Mountains since 1978 — among the highest vineyard elevations in Napa County. Bill planted all the vines himself beginning in 1982, farming organically, with yields of just over a ton per acre from small, concentrated berries grown in decomposed volcanic tuff soils. The estate’s small block of Sangiovese is planted to the Brunello di Montalcino clone.
