Lytton Estate Vineyard is located in the hills and bench land separating Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys, just north of Healdsburg, Sonoma County. The oldest Petite Sirah vines on the estate were planted in 1901 and the youngest in 2008, spanning Lytton East (12 acres) and Lytton West (20.4 acres), with 12 acres from Lytton West used for this wine. Vines are head trained with no trellis and spur pruned, growing in gravelly clay loam soils at yields of 3.0 tons per acre.
2022 was the third year of drought, though spring rains helped the vines. Two heat spells pushed the vines to another early harvest. Mild summer weather evenly ripened the Petite Sirah at Lytton West, and by September 7th the hillside blocks of dark, tightly packed clusters had accumulated enough sugar to begin picking, with the lowest-elevation parcels ready five days later. Five blocks were chosen for their deep color, rich texture, and complexity.
Dark opaque black color, briary blackberry fruit nose with a hint of pepper, full bodied, well coated tannins on the palate, vanilla mint and floral notes with a long finish.
