The Richard G. Peterson 2017 Pinot Noir is produced in an elegant Burgundian style from Dick Peterson’s estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA situated just southeast of Monterey Bay. Boasting one of the longest growing seasons in California and classic cool-climate conditions shaped by coastal winds and morning fog, the vineyard combines two distinct clones — 50% R-4 and 50% Wrotham — the latter discovered by Dick decades ago in Wrotham Village in southeast England and transported to California. Dr. Peterson is the only person in the United States to produce this combination of clones, making his Pinot Noir truly one-of-a-kind.
Pale ruby-purple in color, the 2017 opens with compelling earthy notes of fungi, damp soil and underbrush over a core of kirsch, raspberry leaves and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing and layered with juicy red berry flavors and spice, followed by soft, silky tannins and a long, mineral-laced finish.
Aromas of ripe and dry strawberries with tea and cedar undertones. Medium to full body. Tangy acidity and a juicy, savory finish.
