Château Pédesclaux is a 5th Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac whose 49-hectare estate — 43.9 hectares in production — sits on Garonne gravel over a limestone base, with vine density ranging from 8,500 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Purchased in late 2009 by real estate entrepreneur Jacky Lorenzetti, the estate has since expanded its holdings to include parcels atop the Milon plateau, interspersed with those of Mouton and Lafite. By 2018, 50% of the vineyard was being farmed using organic and biodynamic methods. Like the very best wines of its appellation, Pédesclaux embodies the density of Pauillac tempered by a unique sensuality.
2018 was the hottest year since 1900, marked by mild temperatures and multiple rainy episodes in winter and spring that recharged soil water reserves but generated unprecedented mildew pressure. The estate’s proximity to the Gironde Estuary ensured good air circulation and spared the vines from disease. Sunshine was 20% above normal from July to September, while rainfall ran 50% below average, creating ideal conditions for tiny, concentrated berries rich in aromas with a dense and suave texture. The essential thermal amplitude between sunny days and cool nights favored rare freshness, aromatic complexity, and tannins combining power with delicateness. Optimal harvests took place from September 25 to October 12.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Pédesclaux comes charging out of the gate with rambunctious baked plums, warm cassis, and Morello cherries, plus hints of spice cake, menthol, and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits and spicy accents, with a soft, fine-grained frame, finishing long.
