Located in Napa’s remote Lovall Valley — a small, cool growing area accessible only through Sonoma, just north of Carneros — Grieve Family Winery was founded by David and Valerie Grieve. The Double Eagle label, named for David’s passion for golf, is a Bordeaux blend crafted from fruit sourced from two exclusive valley-floor vineyard sites in St. Helena and Oakville — Mill Creek Vineyard and Skellenger Vineyard. French-born winemaker Philippe Melka, whose résumé includes Dominus, Château Haut-Brion, and Pétrus, marries old-world traditions and sensibilities with new-world protocols to craft wines that are harmonious expressions of site, varietal and vintage.
The grapes were vinified individually by block to maximize the individual character of each vineyard in the final blend. The lots were fermented in stainless steel tanks with an average of 22 days on the skins before aging for 18 months in French oak. The final blend displays the rich, fruit-driven character that is the signature of their select valley-floor sites.
Aromas of cedar, cocoa and plum become mouthfilling flavors of freshly ground coffee and juicy, ripe black fruits. The tannins are palate coating and succulent, balanced by mouthwatering length for a satisfying, full-bodied red wine.
