Garys’ Vineyard is a 50-acre estate located along the terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range, overlooking the Salinas River Valley. Named after partners Gary Franscioni and Gary Pisoni, the vineyard was planted in 1996 using budwood obtained from a famed vineyard in Burgundy. It sits on Arroyo Seco sandy loam soils in a maritime climate shaped by strong coastal winds blown in from Monterey Bay, where foggy mornings and sunny, breezy afternoons keep the southeast-facing slopes considerably cooler than the Salinas Valley to the east.
The 2018 Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir was harvested on September 27–28, 2018, with fruit picked at 26.9 to 27.5 Brix. The wine was aged 15 months in 60% new French oak and bottled on February 12, 2020.
Shimmering ruby-red in color, this wine opens with an expressive bouquet of red fruit preserves, potpourri and exotic spices, with a smoky mineral topnote that builds with air. Bright and energetic on the palate, it offers spice-accented Chambord, cherry, floral pastille and succulent herb flavors that show excellent detail and solid thrust, finishing with smooth, harmonious tannins, a hint of vanilla and strong, floral-driven persistence.
