Tasting Notes

Our single vineyard Syrah comes from an Alban clone. To achieve optimal balance and texture, any grapes not meeting our standards were discarded.

To accentuate the character and aromatics of the Syrah, we co-fermented with a few Viognier grapes which were harvested from a boutique vineyard on West Dry Creek Road in the Russian River Valley. We later blended in a small amount of Grenache, which was fermented separately.  All of the fruit was hand-picked and hand-sorted, and the wine was aged for over 18 months in new French and Hungarian oak.  Each barrel of wine was evaluated biweekly.

While this is a wine built to age, the 2014 Geometry is very approachable now. In its current youthful state, it presents a nose of spice, bacon fat, raspberry and honeysuckle. The palate is dominated by a luscious combination of dark stone fruits, tobacco, saddle leather and tannins that will continue to give this wine structure for decades to come. Through at least mid-2018, we recommend decanting 30-45 minutes prior to drinking.

The mouthfeel is rich but not heavy, and impeccably balanced. The acid brings structure and tone to the wine, supporting a long, persistent finish. Despite its youth, the wine is very well integrated and balanced. This elegant wine will pair well with grilled meats, game and hearty pasta dishes, and it is also delicious to drink on its own.

The Terrior

Located in the distinctive cool climate of Bennett Valley, Moaveni Vineyard features steep slopes which make for ideal drainage. Due to the moderating effect of our climate, we also experience longer hang time than most areas. Fog that appears in the morning tends to leave the vineyard later in the day, a perfect environment in which to grow Syrah. This unique terroir results in wines with fully developed fruit and floral flavors combined with freshness and excellent aging potential.

The consistent high quality of the fruit that this vineyard yields is the ultimate proof that this varietal is planted in the right place.

The Brand

The balance, proportion, and integrity of nature are central to the Geometry brand. These characteristics define our vision, and accordingly each year we focus on creating complex and nuanced wines that are also well-integrated and harmonious.
