Mission Codename The Expanse

We offer you today’s wine with our very boldest recommendation! If the bottle price is too high for you to reach our included ground shipping on 6 or more bottles offer, don’t forget that you can mix & match with the other wines on our home page. There are several great, budget-friendly selections, there.

Peanut butter and Jelly. Cookies and Milk. Pancakes and Syrup… These are all things that are great on their own but made better when combined. Just like today’s Sbragia 2012 Godspeed Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which matches Sbragia with Godspeed, one of our favorite wineries, with one of our favorite vineyards.

This wine has a nice deep dark garnet coloring with a thin ring of magenta at the meniscus. You know as soon as your nose nears the rim of the glass that this is a big wine, and the bouquet doesn’t disappoint with fragrant aromas of cassis, currant, pomegranate, cherry compote, sandalwood, and potpourri. Taking a sip, the wine is expansive with flavors of anise, cacao, black plum, black cherry and cranberry. This wine has an intriguing structure, first rushing to and filling the back of the palate before cresting towards the front of the palate, finally slowly receding for a long finish. Try a broiled tri-tip, garnished with red and green peppers, onions and asparagus for a hearty meal that stacks up to this hearty wine.

Winemaker Ed Sbragia, who made wines at Beringer Winery for 32 years, now focuses the majority of his attention on his namesake Sbragia Family Vineyards - where he’s doing the finest work of his life! Today’s wine is one of the very finest that we’ve tasted from this grand man of winemaking.

Winemaker Ed Sbragia said, “It’s no secret that we love mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and year after year the fruit from Mt. Veeder’s Godspeed Vineyard justifies my passion. There’s an intensity and concentration to the grapes that practically jumps out of the crusher, and with careful handling, this intensity translates to a wine of enormous depth and richness.”

Godspeed is a craft grower in the much-lauded Mount Veeder Appellation of the Napa Valley. Most of their fruit is sold to other wineries that make wines from their gorgeous fruit. The Godspeed vineyard is the project of Larry Stricker and family. The vineyard sits atop Mt. Veeder, At 1,500 feet elevation. This picturesque vineyard is an exemplary place for growing classic Napa Valley mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard, which was planted in 1987, is planted on a collection of steep hillsides with volcanic soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines that snake across the hillside slopes produce small clusters of deeply concentrated grapes.

Here’s what the wine press has to say.

94 Points - James Suckling - “This is very fine and intense with blueberry, dark chocolate and hazelnut aromas and flavors. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Needs two to three years of bottle age to soften.”

91 Points - Robert Parker - “It is interesting that once you move out of Sonoma to Napa, the distinctive loamy soil/earthiness is less pronounced in the Cabernet Sauvignons. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Godspeed from Mount Veeder is a big wine (15.3% natural alcohol). The color is a dense ruby/purple and the wine shows some vanillin, baking spices, and blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. It is tight since bottling, but offers outstanding purity, richness, depth and texture. Forget it for another 2-4 years and drink it over the following two-plus decades.”
