Moillard-Grivot 2013 'Clos du Meix Trouhans' Fixin AOC

Mission Codename Ain't Broke

Burgundy can get really complicated, so allow us to simplify the scope of this deal: BUY, BUY, BUY! Now, onto what makes it so thrilling, explained in 3 steps, one at a time. First the place, because above all else, that’s what matters in Burgundy most, where the French and nowadays universal notion of terroir, or sense of place, was born in the Middle Ages. This awesome red is a Village level Burgundy, made entirely from Pinot Noir grown in the vineyards surrounding the idyllic hamlet of Fixin. It is a mid-tier level of quality, sitting right in between the Regional and Cru classifications. One of the northernmost appellations of the Côte de Nuits, which itself the northern sector of the Côte d’Or, or the golden slope, from where the world’s undisputedly most prized Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs come. In fact, not even a 5 minutes’ drive south from Fixin and you’re in Gevrey-Chambertin, where 25% of Burgundy’s crème de le crème vineyards reside.

What matters next in Burgundy is the vintage - 2013 for reds, according to Jancis Robinson was; “The fairy-tale vintage?” Hundreds of 2013 Burgundies I have tasted to date are generally delightfully terroir-specific. From the right addresses, wines for true Burgundy lovers.” Of equal importance is the producer. The Moillard and Grivot partnership dates back to the French Revolution! Since their inception, they have focused on growing and sourcing some of the best grapes to showcase the great terroirs they bottle.

A pastel tone of cranberry fades out to an extensive circumference of glowing brick orange. Wafting intensely out of the glass are pomegranate, blood orange, Bing cherry, raspberry, vibrant, fresh with a backdrop of spice. Once on the palate, it takes after its neighbor Gevrey-Chambertin, with the classic marriage of cherries and earth evident. Traditional, old school juiciness on the extensive finish leaves you yearning for the next sip, exquisitely delicate. This wine would be perfect with a smorgasbord of well-aged cheeses, charcuterie, roasted nuts, and dried fruits, but the pairing possibilities are endless as it was made for food. All this for under $16? You’ve got to be kidding!

This Fixin (pronounced fix-en), normally a $40+ wine comes from a walled “Clos” single vineyard that was designated by the Monks of the Middle Ages, and is the deepest deal you may ever come across at 60% off, from a region whose wines are always on the rise with demand, pricing, and scarcity. Seize the day, it ain’t broke, just FIXIN!

Fun Fact: Drive 20 minutes north from Fixin and you’re in the university town of Dijon, where mustard was first made.
