The greatness of the Northern Rhône is no longer a well-kept secret. Top producers, just like Burgundy, are in huge demand, as reflected by rising prices and scarcity.

It is getting increasingly difficult to find great values from this small region, but here we have a baby Hermitage, a Crozes that is simply put gorgeous for the money, after our huge break. What’s in the glass is equally impressive…

A dense, opaque black-purple color with a slim ruby rim greets the eye. Redolent on the nose, wearing a sweet perfume of cassis, truffles, and licorice. Opulent and concentrated on the broad palate with bright acidity, while pleasantly medium-bodied. It gets meatier, spicier, and savory on the long, elegant finale. Enjoy this classic red with charcuterie or aged cow or sheep’s milk cheeses.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate speaks highly at a visit earlier this year, “For a big man, Pierre Gaillard still moves around the cellar with surprising grace, easily striding from one barrel to the next. Located above the picturesque medieval village of Malleval, the drive up to his winery and tasting room offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. The wines are pretty darn good too… If the current trend of hot, sunny vintages continues, these will increasingly be wines to seek out.”

“The fruit-driven, gently tannic and accessible style of Gaillard’s wines is on full display with this set of releases, which won’t require much patience before delivering maximum drinking pleasure. Opaque bright-rimmed ruby. Smoke-tinged blueberry and cherry on the nose, along with hints of cracked pepper and olive. Round and fleshy but lively as well, offering gently sweet blue fruit and floral pastille flavors supported by a spine of juicy acidity.
