Mission Codename Chic-a-cherry cola
Napa Cab! You love it. Seven days a week, 365 days a year.
And you love it even more when it’s priced like THIS. Normally $85 and now $25?!
Could it be a flashback Tuesday to when a gallon of gas was under a dollar?
This ticks all the boxes. Hailing from the near–flawless 2021 vintage. Grown in Coombsville, where some of the hottest Cabs are being made. The quality and prices are both on the upswing there, which makes our price even more astounding.
Like many before him, Craig was a true “garagiste” winemaker. Literally making small batches in his own garage. But he’s sure come a long way since 2009 when he started.
This screaming value hails 100% from a single vineyard, just a stone’s throw from Ghost Horse which was just in the news for the first Napa Cab to be offered at, gulp, $25,000 a bottle. More on that madness here.
Where were we? Oh yea, $25, not $25K!
Speaking of… per the definitive ‘money’ mag Robb Report “it’s a matter of location, location, and location. Tucked east of the town of Napa itself, in the southern reaches of Napa Valley, Coombsville is nestled in a bowl, an ancient volcanic caldera ringed on three sides by hills at the base of the Vaca Range. During the growing season, cooling fog and marine breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay swirl into the caldera, with the fog burning off late, keeping temperatures often 10 or more degrees cooler than AVAs to the north. In the fall, those cool conditions lengthen harvest, giving winemakers the chance to let the fruit hang, developing complexity and mature tannins without losing critical acidity. The result: enviable balance between ripeness and vitality. As Andy Erickson puts it, Coombsville wine speaks of place. It combines intensity, richness with freshness, and a savory side that we sometimes miss.”
This textbook Coombsville Cab may be young but makes the grade with its bold core of blackberry and black currant flanked by peppered jerky, and pencil lead, all framed in with sturdy, fine-grained tannins. The oak treatment seems subdued here, and it has a refined, old-school feel.
If you’re looking for an honest, well-made Napa Cabernet buy a self-made winemaker of Italian heritage, at a price that’s beyond fair you can’t do much better.
Can’t even find a decent $25-a-glass Napa Cab at restaurants these days. This will go fast.
