Mission Codename Taking flight
“Randy Dunn’s Cabernets represent one of the pinnacles of excellence within the school of structured wines built for aging.” – Vinous
Can it be?! Do my eyes deceive me?
THE Long Shadows! On our very own little corner of the wine web?! We’re SO not worthy!
Skip straight to the checkout and lock this one down STAT! Then come back, brush up, and prepare for an absolute thrill ride when this lands at your feet.
LONG SHADOWS!! Made by the one and only RANDY DUNN. With 97 points from Jeb, similar big raves from the other pros, and a healthy, albeit rare, discount layered on top. My oh my!
If you don’t know about Long Shadows, today is the day you get some “edjumacation” on one of the best producers in Washington, if not the entire country. They do it like nobody else, and it starts by recruiting a gang of winemakers from all over. A star-studded roster that includes local favorites like Melka and Randy Dunn, and foreign invaders like Michel Rolland, Augustin Huneeus, and Armin Diel. Every one of them puts their stamp of approval on a particular wine, and you simply cannot go wrong any which way.
Per Vinous “The point of this venture is for its multiple bottlings to offer accurate reflections of the individual participating winemakers, and under the direction of estate manager/winemaker Gilles Nicault they have always been remarkably different from each other every year, not to mention consistently excellent.”
But with Randy Dunn?! You can go OH SO RIGHT.
The man is a legend among legends. His own Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain is the proof - where “age worthy” goes to die. His wines practically come with an infinite lifespan. Not to mention depth and complexity. Lay it down for 5, 10, 50 years - and enjoy at will any time between.
Long Shadows frontman Gilles Nicault collaborated with Randy Dunn on this masterpiece. It’s lavish, densely layered, and rippling with black fruit - ripe blackberry, plum, and fig, with toasty sweet walnuts, a sprinkle of rosemary, pencil shavings, and truffles all combine into one mind-bending force of nature that will leave you reeling. Definitely “unabashedly hedonistic” as Northwestern Wine Report notes.
If you don’t buy a bottle of this, there’s simply no hope… when it hits your lips, you WILL NOT be sad about it. That’s a fact.
97 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “All Cabernet Sauvignon and a blend put together by Randy Dunn, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather is inky purple-hued and offers a brilliant nose of cassis, new leather, graphite, and truffly earth. This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink this remarkable Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon over the coming two decades. Drink 2024-2044.”
96 Points – Owen Bargreen “A standout wine from a tough vintage, the 2021 ‘Feather’ comes from primarily the Weinbau and Dionysus Vineyards in the White Bluffs AVA, as well as a handful of sites in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Pencil led and cedar wood mark the nose alongside hints of white pepper-dusted chocolate and creme de cassis. This comes off exceedingly elegant and seamless throughout the drinking experience, as the oak treatment caresses the mid-palate. Like all great wines from this vintage, enjoy now in its heady youth.”
95 Points – Northwestern Wine Report “It’s aromatically expressive, with notes of toast, coffee, freshly mortared herb, assorted barrel spices, and cherry. A generous mid-palate ups the interest. It’s unabashedly hedonistic – full throttle – bringing a mouthful of fruit and pleasure.”
94+ Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather is lifted and perfumed with a cascade of red berries, dusty rose and lavender pastille. This is pure elegance, silken, polished and nearly creamy in feel, with fresh acidity and complicating notes of dark chocolate and cola. It leaves a spicy sensation that lingers, finishing firm and tannic as hints of blueberry preserves fade. Drink 2026-2034.”
