Mission Codename Flash in the night

“Pretty special stuff.”

“Under the radar winery.”

“Alors la je suis bluffe mais quel beaute pour le prix!”

That third one translates to “I’m absolutely blown away; it’s such a beautiful wine for the price.

And now, let us regale you with our take on this stunning hot off the presses 94-POINT discovery.

Firefly was unknown to us. And probably to most people. The small producer makes just a few hundred cases per year, so you won’t find it in the grocery store or even your most well-connected local shop.

And you certainly won’t find it anywhere near our price… $25 for an aged Napa Cab like this?! My oh my… you’ll know you scored big time when you taste it. Pinky promise.

Sometimes we judge a wine by its label, and at first glance, this didn’t exactly shout “ULTRA HIGH-QUALITY JUICE INSIDE!” but one sniff gave a hint about the contents - layers of violets, sweet red cherry, and toasty spices.

And then the first sip had us transfixed.

2015 was a banner year in Napa, one described as “a very exciting vintage that gives great pleasure” by James Suckling and met with unanimous praise from everyone in the industry. And now, with ten years of age? The proof is strong as ever if this is any indication. Barely showing its decade of age, this is entering a sweet spot for drinking and just starting to peak if anything. So polished. So plush. So JUICY, ripe, and wonderfully structured with resolved tannins and sweet oak.

Then we dug in and learned more about this wine, and it all started making sense.

Firefly is a small family-run producer, and their winemaker, Anthony Beckman, has experience at Peay, Hudson, and Balletto Vineyards. And, apparently, making a killer Coombsville Cab that can stand alongside - and probably straight up crush just about ANY of the $100+ examples out there.

We’re loaded up on our end with a few cases already. This will surely be a favorite, and one of those wines that floods the support channel with reordering requests… but no guarantees! Stake your claim now, while it’s here!

94 Points – Decanter (tasting note pending) Same score on the previous vintage; “Sourced from the Coombsville AVA in the foothills of Mt. George, this 2014 vintage has been impeccably cellared and, at 11 years old, remains compact, structured, and highly expressive of its appellation. It showcases ironstone minerality and loamy earth character, accented by bright bay laurel notes. Medium-bodied, it reveals layers of rich loamy earth, tobacco, and fragrant toasty cedarwood spices, offering a beautifully mature and balanced profile.”
