Mission Codename Velvet gold

We don’t know how this secret’s still under wraps. But lucky for you, it is!

Long-time operatives are already adding this bottle to their cart – and for good reason. According to the Wine Advocate, Trinité Estate makes “Classically styled, restrained wines that represent great value.”

(Psst, we snuck in a bit more of their flagship 97 pointer into the Store today too.)

Today’s library release is from a great vintage, drinking at the peak of complexity. With a solid core of black fruit matched by developing notes of leather and tobacco, the 2016 ‘Amaino’ displays a textural depth and underlying graphite minerality.

And it’s over 50% off?! You’ll want in on this.

We first met Gonzague and Claire Lurton on an early mission to Bordeaux. As part of one of the region’s most influential wine families - stewards of over two dozen Châteaux - they’re famous for running Château Haut-Bages-Libéral (Pauillac) and Château Durfort-Vivens (Margaux) on the cutting edge of organic and biodynamic farming.

You would never know any of this talking to them – they are humble, unassuming, and absolutely dedicated to making great wine. So, when they set their sights on building a new estate in Sonoma back in 2012, we assumed it would be the next Opus One or Vérité. Instead, Trinité Estate remains one of Chalk Hill’s best-kept secrets.

Their ambition is clearly personified in the wine: to bring their Bordeaux sensibility to Sonoma soil. They worked with neighbor and winemaking legend Pierre Seillan, the mastermind behind Sonoma’s crown jewel Vérité, a perennial 100-point darling. With deep Bordeaux roots and Seillan’s guidance, the Lurtons established Trinité Estate in Chalk Hill, a project destined for greatness from the start.

To complete the dream team, they enlisted the globe-trotting enologist Éric Boissenot – though he hates the spotlight, he’s of Bordeaux’s secret weapon behind First Growths Latour, Lafite, Margaux, and Mouton, as well as Palmer, Pichon-Lalande, Ducru-Beaucaillou, and countless others. Despite his elite résumé, Boissenot makes time to give Trinité the attention it deserves. French-born vigneron Nicolas Vonderheyden oversees day-to-day management of the vineyards and winery under his guidance.

Their vineyard site is just over 20 acres on the sun-drenched slopes of Chalk Hill, planted on volcanic-loam soils ideal for the bold structure and graphite-like minerality they impart to Bordeaux varieties. The 2016 vintage offered ideal conditions – dry spring, even ripening, and a deep well of winemaking knowledge – all culminating in this poised, textural red.

We were blown away when we tasted it at HQ. So, if you like insider Bordeaux doppelgangers with pedigree, polish, and power, this is your move.

Stock up before the word gets out.

93 Points – James Suckling “Amaino is more Merlot driven, fruit forward, meant for immediate pleasure. Amaino is located in Chalk Hill Ava, Sonoma, on the western slopes of the famed Mayacamas Mountains. The name “Amaino” means volcanic soil in native American. A juicy red with plenty of cherry and currant character and hints of orange peel and tar. Medium body with red-fruit flavors. Hints of asphalt and earth, too. From organically grown grapes. Drinking well now. The wine is concentrated with great ripeness and silky tannins making it ideal for barbecues.”
