Mission Codename Won't you be my Nabor?
Our first reaction triggered The Who’s Classic Rock earworm: “Whoooooooo are you??” There’s under-the-radar, and then there’s Dusty Nabor levels of under-the-radar.
Well over 60% OFF and a come-hither price of just $22 makes this a no-brainer buy for your cellar fortifications.
Of course, we were actually very familiar with Dusty from a tasting at a Paso festival several years ago. His wines were a high mark of the visit - and he was one of the more genuinely nice guys we met on the trip.
It had been years since we heard from him though, until mutual Wine Spies friend Bobby Moy of Chiron mentioned he might be sitting on some 2021 Cab he needed help moving. We got the samples. We tasted. We approved with absolute confidence. And then sent our strongest negotiator out to cut the deal.
And thus, we’re turning it loose for a mere $22 today!
Set up in a humble industrial park in Ventura County’s Camarillo, for the last ten years Dusty has been quietly producing 90+ scoring wines at (VERY) tiny quantities that he would sell to the general wine loving population. Mostly his mailing list members, who usually drain the entire production year after year. Luckily for you, and us (we’re buying cases of this one) that wasn’t the case with the 2021 vintage.
Not open to the public. Not stocked up on the wine shelves of your local grocery. Not something you’d ever likely be lucky enough to come across. Until NOW that is!
That Dusty is even making wine at all is one of life’s quirky little miracles. He went from professional motocross to professional poker, to car racing, and then golf, until finally settling on competing in triathlons.
Fate brought him in touch with triathlete and teammate Karin Langer, curator of a boutique online wine shop. You can probably guess what happened next. Somebody (hint: named Dusty) got the wine bug and started making his own.
Dusty’s single-vineyard 2021 Villa Colibri Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely a Classic Rock version of a Los Olivos District red. Juicy and forward in style, with camphor, blackberry compote, cedar, and warm incense waft up from the glass. Like a ripping `70s-era guitar solo, the palate takes no prisoners with its “wild abandon meets precision” notes of baking spices, cranberry, leather, and tropical-fruit like acidity. Feel free to air guitar to this one, it’s encouraged!
We don’t know how much of this was made, but it wasn’t a lot—and Dusty is sold out of it so we may very well have grabbed the LAST of this vintage that you’ll ever see. So maybe put down the air guitar just long enough to grab this before it’s gone!
