What may be the only “Catastrophe” worth the festivities…

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has the intro, “Adversity Cellars is the husband-and-wife label of Russell and Heidi Bevan. Sourcing fruit from some of the same vineyards he taps for his other labels, Bevan has turned out a bevy of high-quality wines. For those unfamiliar with Bevan’s winemaking style, these are rich, full-throttle red wines made from vineyards chosen/managed for lower-than-average yields, picked at high levels of ripeness, and aged in high proportions of new French oak - Taransaud and Darnajou… despite pushing the various elements to the max, the wines emerge with a delicious sense of harmony and balance.”

But we hear you ask, how on earth is this 2/3 OFF an otherwise untouchable $225 mailing list price?

As the name suggests, we are taking advantage of an “Adversity” that 2020 brought on the Napa Valley, and how Bevan maneuvered his way around “Catastrophe” - to make a wine he felt the confidence to release with his name on it. He made NO other wine at Bevan in 2020 and only a Harbison at Adversity, so guess where all his other coveted fruit sources went? Per the couple, this Cabernet is “a combination of the highest quality vineyard-designate grapes sourced from south Napa and Oakville that were not affected by the devastating fires of 2020.” And those we deduce ought to be Saunders, Wildfoote, Tin Box, and Tench, the most famous one that Bevan partly owns, neighboring Screaming Eagle.

No reviews, but does the man with 40 x 100-pointers under his belt need them anymore? Wine Advocate describes the 2021 as with “plenty of cherry fruit in a wonderfully ripe, soft, approachable form, accented by hints of mocha,” Jeb Dunnuck finds “black raspberries, cassis, graphite, dark chocolate, and lots of baking spice notes” and The Wine Independent adds it “bursts with bold notions of blackberry preserves, warm cassis, and mulberries giving way to hints of spice cake, aniseed, and menthol.” All there in the 2020 too, in our opinion, and then some…

Bevan’s wines come at a “fair” price that exceeds the budget of most casual Cab lovers. NOT TODAY!

Have you already checked out with plenty? Good. Cause we have a limited number of cases, and you can now read their super detailed and vivid blog entry here.

We’ll leave you with a quote from the latest interview with the man by The Wine Independent: “What’s the opposite of a shrinking violet? A stampeding rosé? Whatever it is, that’s Russell Bevan. Larger than life and known for his pedal-to-the-metal winemaking style, Russell is also an incredibly creative and meticulous winemaker with a keen nose for singular vineyard sites.”
