Altra Wines was started by partners with deep ties in the wine industry. Relationships that they leveraged to give them access to some of the best fruit and talent in Napa. The only catch – they weren’t allowed to talk about it. To anyone.

Their production was small, and those who knew, well, they would snap up everything they could! If you are a long-term Operative, you may remember we offered their spectacular Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc years ago. But it’s been almost a decade!

When they reached out to us, out of the blue, we couldn’t believe it. And we couldn’t wait to try the wine.

Labeled simply as a Red Wine, make no mistake… This is serious, pulse-quickening Cabernet Sauvignon going undercover! It’s so top-secret, they didn’t label it by variety as another layer of subterfuge to disguise its true nature.

So, what are we allowed to say?

First, it comes from one of Yountville’s famed vineyards. A historic site, wines labeled with the vineyard’s name routinely score 95-100 Points from top critics. We wish we could say more! But it is legit as they come. The owner’s top bottling can sell for more than $500!!!

The winemaker as well is a closely guarded secret. In 2015 he was a rising star in Napa, who’s strong ties to Bordeaux and knack for making excellent, top-scoring Cabernet grabbed the attention of collectors and critics. But to say his name would be giving the game away.

It is this top-secret pedigree that is the key to this wine’s longevity.

Wine Advocate only reviewed this vintage, noting almost ten years ago it’s expected to evolve to 2033. Popping it now, with another decade in the bottle, reveals still lively currant and stewed black berry cobbler aromas underpinned with cigar tobacco, worn leather, and cedar complexity. On the palate the tannins have been broken in to a crushed velvet texture, still firm and plump, but softened and supple. The quality and pedigree is immediately obvious and the wine lingers comfortably, in no hurry to finish.
