Mission Codename A home run, of course

“I don’t know this producer, but certainly they have delivered a stunning bottle of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.” wrote a bedazzled Robert Parker once.

You don’t know JACK either? We got you!

OG Ops may recall this hugely popular second label SB we featured by JACK (and behind the scenes, we spent the next 4 years begging for an allocation of their Cab!), or baseball fans have heard of the major league players Chris Iannetta and Vernon Wells. Those two wine fans are the visionaries behind JACK. Back in 2012, per Wine Spectator “the two discovered a shared affinity for Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon, and soon they made the decision to take a swing at winemaking together.”

Guess what? They knocked it out of the park in the first inning. “There’s a new All-Star in Napa Valley” Wine Spectator added in a later issue, “Former Toronto Blue Jays, LA Angels and New York Yankees outfielder Vernon Wells has teamed with Seattle Mariners catcher Chris Iannetta to create JACK.”

Thanks to their consulting winemaker, Grant Long Jr. who owns and makes quiet legends Aonair and Reverie that sell out every vintage, with mailing lists that grew by word of mouth alone. He made Jack wines through 2020 when the ubiquitous Julien Fayard took over this pampered project.

Oh, and we’re on Atlas Peak, baby! Sharing the neighborhood are Stagecoach, Alpha Omega, Antinori, The Debate, Acumen, just to name a few. Well-integrated toasty oak as well as classic Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, graphite, Asian spices, and licorice dominate the nose and the palate. It’s a benchmark 2018 - ripe, impressively concentrated, and structured, with terrific purity, ripe tannins, and a great long finish. Enjoy this beauty over the coming decade and beyond, so buy in abundance to age some.

You’ll come back asking for more, but the game will be long over, or we don’t know JACK!

95 Points – Wine Advocate “The 2018 JACK Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep garnet-purple color and comes barreling out of the glass with notes of ripe blueberries, black raspberries and blackcurrant cordial, plus nuances of chocolate-covered cherries, violets and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegantly played, delivering bright, impactful fruit and a fine-grained texture with oodles of freshness, finishing with a perfumed skip in its step. Drink 2022-2042.”

94+ Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from JACK winery is all from Atas Peak, which is in the more southern part of the eastern side of the valley. This is a classic, rich, age-worthy red offering lots of red and blue fruits, notes of candied violets and tobacco, medium to full-bodied richness, and building tannins that come through on the palate. It has plenty of fruit, a good mid-palate, and the class to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully for 15-20 years in cold cellars. Drink 2025-2046.”
