Mission Codename Gap Year
Unanimous, unapologetic and OUTSTANDING!!!
Lauded for double 98 points, three times Double Gold, and Best of Class. The 2022 vintage totally DOMINATED the competition!
Per Vinous, Ross Cobb makes “some of the most beguiling, transparent Pinots in all of California.”
At $35, this wine is borderline criminal. 100% Gap’s Crown fruit from the celebrated Petaluma Gap, a cool, wind-swept pocket inside the larger Sonoma Coast appellation. Created by a winemaker whose résumé reads like a Pinot hall of fame.
Ross Cobb, yes, that COBB, of cult-favorite Cobb Wines has been crafting cool climate Pinot for over two decades. Earlier stops include Williams Selyem and Flowers, plus a longstanding relationship with Hirsch Vineyards on the true Sonoma Coast. Ross Cobb owns the cool coastal Pinot corner!
Sunset calls it “rich, well-balanced and long lasting”- No surprise here, they gave it a whopping 98 Points, Double Gold AND Best in Class… Score! TOTAL HAT TRICK! A Perfect Hand, and it doesn’t stop there either, Double Gold and Best of Class, followed by many other competitions too! Back-to-back greatness all for how much again??
And the vineyard itself? Gap’s Crown is the kind of site that producers wait years to get fruit from. A window into a short list of names lucky enough to bottle it includes Kosta Browne, Gary Farrell, Typicité, MacPhail, Sojourn, Cuvaison, and Saxon Brown. Think of it this way: what Beckstoffer is to Napa Cabernet, Gap’s Crown is to Petaluma Gap.
In the glass, this wine is stupidly delicious from the first sip. The kind of wine that sparks an instant dance party… or has you quietly “relocating” the bottle for personal use. Call it selfish; I call it priorities. 😀 These under-the-radar gems are exactly why I do this job… and why you’ll want in on this absurdly delicious wine.
Aromas of dark cherry pie, violets, cocoa, and baking spices reveal brilliant raspberry and red plums, followed by crushed berries on the palate, refined and elegant tannins leading into an AMAZING long and elegant finish. I’m still doing my happy dance while writing this!
At HALF OFF, I’m stocking my own locker; no shame. It’s basicallya the MVP of the table. Seriously, Furthermore makes tiny amounts from this vineyard, and their wine club usually snaps it up. We’re lucky to have even seen it.
If you’re still on the fence, Wine Spectator may help convince you why this vineyard is nearly impossible to see again at this killer price: “Gap’s Crown, a Sonoma Coast vineyard supplies Pinot Noir to top producers like Kosta Browne, Patz & Hall, and MacPhail was purchased by Bill Price (who) holds ownership interests in wineries such as Kistler, Three Sticks, Gary Farrell, as well as Durell Vineyard…” - Now, that’s a bragging rights list if I ever saw one!
A killer site, a master winemaker, and a price that won’t last.
