Foremost luxury lifestyle publication Robb Report calls it a “legendary Champagne, housed in an instantly recognizable Art Nouveau-style bottle.”
Arguably the most archetypical of sparkling luxury, the venerable Fleur de Champagne - “the flower of Champagne” - Perrier-Jouët’s Belle Epoque is a tribute to the dawn of the 20th century and timeless Art Nouveau of the era. As a symbol of elegance, grace, and nobility that only the finest of Champagnes can represent, there are very few gifts on earth that can convey eternal love as exquisitely.
Let’s step back in time to 1810, when Épernay-based cork merchant Pierre Nicolas Perrier married Rose Adélaide Jouët. Successors Henri Gallice and his younger brother Octave were both art lovers, but while Henri managed the family business in Épernay, Octave spent much of this time in Paris, during the ‘Belle Epoque’. Those heady years at the start of the 20th century when France was swept along by whirlwind progress. Drawing on his passion for botany and inspired by Japanese white anemones he commissioned Art Nouveau pioneer Emile Gallé, to design four magnums enameled with this delicate motif. Delivered in 1902, these became an iconic emblem, not only of the prestigious cuvée but also of Perrier-Jouët itself.
Fast forward to this century, one of the oldest wines in the world, verified by Guinness Book of Records, was a 1825 vintage Perrier-Jouët opened and tasted in 2009 when Master of Wine Serena Sutcliffe said that “it must have been incredibly powerful and extremely sweet when young” *while Michel Bettane of La Revue du Vin de France thought that its youthfulness was *“unbelievable.”
You know what else is unbelievable? $119 - as in the best price anywhere EVER for this ultimate vintage prestige cuvée - while it lasts.
95 Points – Tastings.com “Yellow straw color. Aromas and flavors of white peach, raspberry vanilla nougat, red apple, and bosc pear with a round, finely carbonated, dryish medium-to-full body and a very long finish with notes of tangerine and lemon cream, red apple, raspberry and strawberry nougat, and hazelnut. Rich and well balanced with a rounded palate and excellent balance of red and white fruits; impress your bubbly loving friends.”
94 Points – Wine Spectator “An elegant Champagne, with a creamy, finely meshed range of pastry cream, yellow apple and pear, almond biscotti, elderflower and preserved lemon flavors. Shows a rich underpinning of toast and smoke, with a frame of bright, delicate acidity. Long, plush finish. Drink now through 2034.”
94 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “Made from 50% Chardonnay, with 45% Pinot Noir and the rest Meunier, and 8 grams per liter of dosage, the 2014 Champagne Belle Époque Brut pours a brilliant straw hue and is fresh with aromas of white peach, a touch of fresh pineapple, and fresh tropical flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it has a more expansive feel on the palate, with more structure and a lively mousse that lends a touch of white pepper on the finish. The palate at this stage is ripe, with pure notes peach fruit, and it’s very fresh in its style.”
94 Points – Falstaff “Pale golden yellow, silver reflections. Yellow stone fruit nuances with fine herbal savouriness and orange zest in the background, a hint of cookie, delicate hints of kumquat and blossom honey. Juicy, fine fruit sweetness, with taut, animating acidity, nuances of mango and peach on the finish, mineral touch on the finish, already very accessible overall, shows length, a versatile food companion.”
