Mission Codename The right chord
“Everything about this wine exudes understatement and sophistication in a harmonious package.” – Vinous
Rothschild?! Say what? Champagne from the family behind Lafite, Mouton, and Opus One? TRIPLE 93s and a healthy 50% OFF brings this luxury house offering to a much more realistic price. You get bubbles fit for a King for a price that’s more in line with a pauper’s pay.
Savvy operatives will remember some of our past offers from this magnificent Champagne house. The buzz continues to grow louder and louder, and over the last few years it’s reached a fevered pitch. It’s now spreading in over 90 countries, the exclusive Champagne supplier of Sail GP (the F1 of Sailboat racing!), and the official Champagne partner of Ritz-Carlton. Definitive luxury.
One whiff smacks you in the face with yellow apples, fresh flowers, and fabulously complex notes of citrus and flint. Coupled with the tension of its creamy mousse and chiseled frame, laden with vibrant fruit and tertiary flourishes, and you will understand why we fell for this stuff.
That, and a staggering 50% off means we can all afford to fill our glasses and party like a Rothschild!
When they decided to get into the Champagne business, rather than buy an existing house (which they could have done), they decided to build their own from the ground up. As Antonio Galloni on Vinous wrote for the inaugural vintage: “Barons de Rothschild (note the plural of Barons) brings together the three branches of the family – Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild of Mouton, Baron Eric de Rothschild of Lafite and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife, Ariane, of Clarke and the Edmond de Rothschild Group. The wines I tasted made it clear this is a serious and highly ambitious project.”
And as Galloni also points out, what we have here is “an especially vinous Champagne that is also a perfect example of a trend …wines that expose the more adventurous style often seen in the most progressive of the grower Domaines.”
The magic behind the Concordia, their flagship multi-vintage blend, is a combination of using a high percentage of reserve wine, a focus on a Chardonnay-forward style using fruit from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sources, and bottling with a low dosage.
When putting their blend together, the team at Barons de Rothschild uses 40%, close to half the wine in the bottle, from their reserve wines aged in Solera. That means there is a little bit from every vintage they have produced since their inception in 2005 in the bottle. Such a high percentage of reserve wine is very rare (and expensive) – think Krug or Bollinger. It gives the wine great depth and complexity. But unlike those other houses, Barons de Rothschild uses a Chardonnay-forward blend – balancing the richness of the reserve wine with the focus and nerve of fruit from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites from Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus, and Trépail. Aged three and a half years on its lees to build toasty breadth and weight on the palate, they bottle with a low 6 g/L dosage – bone dry – to let all the intricacy shine through.
You see, the Rothschilds see Champagnes exactly like their other flagships in Bordeaux and the New World. No expense spared. All to ensure one thing: the name on the bottle, and the shield of honor accompanying it is never compromised. Since Napoleonic times, they have been the noblest banking family in Europe, and all their enterprises are built on principles of the family motto: Concordia, Integritas, Industria (Unity, Integrity, Commerce). When they ‘banked’ on Champagne at the turn of this century, everyone knew they would get it right.
It is from their motto that this Champagne, Concordia, gets its name. To them, it represents not just the Unity of the family, but of their vineyard sources and vintages – a multi-vintage blend that is truly more than the sum of its parts.
So hurry up! This opportunity to party like a Rothschild for HALF OFF won’t last!!!
93 Points – Vinous “The NV Brut Concordia blends 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, using 40% reserve wines, some from a perpetual reserve. Slight smokiness opens the nose, revealing creamy ripe apple flesh and a touch of mandarin peel. Lively mousse and a linear freshness on the palate immediately convey purity and poise. Finest foam washes around chalkiness on a slender bright body. Everything about this wine exudes understatement and sophistication in a harmonious package. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Drink 2024 – 2034.”
93 Points – Wine Enthusiast “This Champagne, made for the three Bordeaux winemaking branches of the Rothschild family, is beautifully mature. It has richness, toast and elegance along with hints of brighter fruitiness. Crisply textured at the end while adding acidity to the mix, it is ready to drink.”
93 Points – Andreas Larsson “Light to medium deep golden colour with fine vivid bubbles. Elegant nose, chardonnay driven with crushed chalk, ripe citrus, pale stone fruit, floral notes and brioche. The palate is fresh and vigorous with fine density and extract, good volume with fine balance between lighter citrus, chalk and darker pinot notes with good autolytic complexity, balanced dosage and a long finely creamy finish.”
