Mission Codename Island in the sky
We’re JACKED to our eyeballs with excitement today. Not from the 300mg of caffeine in the Bang energy drink, or because Sunday football is just on the horizon. Actually, maybe that is part of the reason… but really, truthfully, it’s because we went back to our favorite family and scored another mind-blowing deal…
MEYER FAMILY!! The one and only! This time we’re bringing a truly elegant and compelling Pinot Noir into your life.
For the few remaining operatives who don’t know yet, Meyer Family is a super cool, under-the-radar winery, and you might recognize Justin Meyer as co-founder of SILVER OAK. After Justin’s passing in 2002 the family set their sights on revisiting Oakville Cabernet. This stunner comes from the Fluffy Billow’s vineyard, situated just next to Bonny’s (where the original Silver Oak was from) and is bordered by elite PlumpJack, Groth and Turnbull. But they also source grapes from some other very cool places. Like Comptche in Mendocino.
Anthill Farms and Adrian Fog are among the select few wineries with access to the incredible Comptche terroir. This tiny, remote vineyard sits a few miles away from the coast, at 800 feet elevation up in Mendocino and it’s defined by the unusually cool weather which serves as the perfect breeding ground for Pinot. Definitely a bit more Burgundian in style, it clocks in at a modest 13.3% and simply vibrates with vivid fruit and complexity. Enticing flavors of blueberries, ripe cherries and perfumed wood launch out the gates, and a touch of funk and leather come creeping in on the backend. Not heavy or extracted, it seems to have everything in perfect balance, with a nice vein of acidity that just begs for some food - we’re thinking a nice braised pork ragù over home-made pasta. MMM.
Mind you, Silver Oak, under it’ sister label Twomey has a Pinot from these parts too, which costs TWICE what you are paying here today, and it’s not even a single vineyard?! Crazy.
If stylish, elegant, world class Pinot Noir gets your heart pumping, please do not miss out on this one. It’s a beauty! Happy Saturday everyone!
