Mission Codename Pinkigio
Warning: This is not your aunt’s Pinot Grigio. Well, it IS cheap. But that’s where any similarity ends.
For starters, it’s pink. More on that later…
Talk about caught off guard. This stuff came at us out of nowhere like Lawrence Taylor on the blindside. Just with way less pain and a lot more pleasure.
You don’t see much Pinot Grigio on TWS. That’s not by accident. Most of them don’t measure up to our standards. They usually are nothing but boring, insipid, one dimensional, simple confectionery, politely put. This is the polar opposite – dry, dynamic, and complex… intellectually stimulating you might say. You probably noticed the color. Copper-salmon? That’s not normal, is it? No, it’s pretty far from normal.
It hails from an ultra-rare, vastly popular Italian twist on Grigio called Ramato, with extended hangtime and skin contact from clones that actually don’t stay white but turn pink on the clusters! Mind you, this is NOT a feral “orange wine” made with deliberate oxidation. On the contrary, it’s crisp, crunchy, packed with succulent freshness.
Distinctive tropical fruits like guava and pineapple mingle with citrus notes of lemon and lime. A viscous palate brings forth refreshing elements of mint, basil and baking spices, along with raspberry and dried nectarine hints. The finish is all about uncommonly rich structure, with a pleasant bitter nuance that lingers on and on. Built for a wide range of cuisines and dishes, spicy, ethnic, exotic or fusion.
In summary, this is like fireworks, liquid pop rocks for wine afficionados… genuinely Russian River, massively cool, *one of our favorite bargains lately in whites, and rosés!”
A Wine Enthusiast special on this unique style explains our fascination, “for rosé aficionados who seek something off the beaten path, or those a little over the rosé trend, Ramato could be your next obsession.”
