Mission Codename Baby Champoux

BOOM! …is what Esploso means in Italian, and boy is today’s feature exploding with value and flavor.

Hope you’re ready to have your Cabernet-loving lid completely blown into the stratosphere! After much finessing and cajoling we finally did it - the long term mission accomplished was procuring another fantastic bottle from the much-loved and praised Washington producer Andrew Will. Easily one of the finest sources for ultra-polished, mind-altering, Bordeaux-inspired Washingtonians. They have been firing on all cylinders SINCE 1989, making all manner of big scoring, highly discernable collectibles.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rightfully raves; “Readers looking for classic, age-worthy Bordeaux blends need look no further than this terrific estate. The wines show singular characters and have broad drink windows. I continue to think these are some of the most impressive, balanced, and age-worthy wines coming out of Washington State. The 2014s show flesh and texture, a rock solid vintage and these wines certainly deserve a place in your cellar.”

The Esploso line is winery-direct only and was recently started by founder and winemaker Chris Camarda’s son Will. For this vintage he sourced grapes exclusively from Champoux, arguably Washington’s top site for Cabernet, shared by a select few other WA legends such as Quilceda Creek and Woodward Canyon. It’s brimming with lush fruit and all the complexity of a postmodern Bolshevik philosopher with none of the confusion. The richness comes without any extra weight. Pure, enjoyable, uncontained spicy, sappy blueberry fruit, fresh-baked berry pie, and a dusting of cocoa riding a nice vein of acidity. Polished, soft tannins and a long, deep, mouthcoating finish. There is no cut of meat, prepared simply, or elaborately that would not benefit from this.

If you know Andrew Will, you know this WILL sell out and you’re already grabbing all you can. If this is your introduction, we highly encourage you to jump in here with both feet and experience this beauty. At 42% OFF you really can’t afford to miss out!

93 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“What looks to be another brilliant wine from Will Camarda, the 2014 Esploso incorporates slightly less Cabernet Sauvignon than the 2013 and is 80% Cabernet, 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that will see 16 months in 50% new French oak. It offers lots of sweet oak as well as blackcurrants, licorice, chocolate and bouquet garni on the nose. Cassis, chocolate, spice box and licorice, with some roasted herbs, the 2014 Esploso is a full-bodied, supple, pure and gorgeously layered wine. This gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated 2014 that has notable purity of fruit, present tannin and a layered, balanced personality that will drink well in its youth, yet also evolve gracefully. Long, pure and clean, with plenty of ripe tannin, it shows the upfront charm of the 2014 vintage, yet it has the density and concentration to keep for 15+ years. Drink 2017-2032.”

“I was able to taste both the 2014s and 2015s from Vashon Island-based Andrew Will, which is run by Chris Camarda. As always, Chris releases two appellation blends (Esploso and Sorella) and a bevy of single vineyard blends from some of the top sites in Washington State. Readers looking for classic, age-worthy Bordeaux blends from the United States can’t go wrong here and these wines continue to fly too far under the radar. Give these a try! Offering plenty of cassis, chocolate, spice-box and licorice aromatics, with hints of roasted herbs, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Esploso is a full-bodied, supple, beautifully pure Cabernet Sauvignon that has plenty of tannins and a great finish. It’s another terrific wine from this estate that can be drunk today or cellared for a decade. Drink 2018-2033.”
