Mission Briefing

Barolo geeks, reassemble!!

The San Lorenzo di Verduno is gone, but check this out.

Another fantastic score for anyone who loves super nerdy, single-vineyard, hyper focused wines with tons of character and a terrific sense of place. And a good deal, too, because normally this sells for $105. Today, it’s $49.

Oh yea, it also brings a gang of big scores (94, 93, 93, 93)

Conterno-Fantino, what a grandiose name in Barolo! Representing the opposite end of the stylistic spectrum of Piedmont, with as modern an approach as the latest handmade screaming yellow Lambo to roll out of the Sant’Agata Bolognese plant. Polished, powerful, and flamboyant in style, it’s a showstopper for sure.

This burts out the gate with instant gratification. While the Fratelli we offered earlier shows a classic style, this flaunts a showy, modern approach. Galloni notes the “intensely ripe fruit and sweet, ripe tannins” while Wine Advocate praised the “generous and expressive” style and Wine & Spirits mirrors those claims, saying “this wine’s flavors of red cherry and strawberry are impressively ripe”. Velvety and round on the palate, with captivating touches of preserved strawberry and cocoa, a bit of black tea, baking spices, and some sweet earth. Irresistible right now with a proper decant, but totally worthy of time in your cellar. Pair with fresh pastas with rich sauces, truffles or mushrooms, roasted lamb, or hare.

We’re proud, no…make that THRILLED to offer you this rare collectible under $50, with an unforeseeable discount over 50% off, worth twice, easily, if not more. With scores galore, it’s yet another sure bet..

Get what you can rapidly and buy enough to patiently witness its evolution over time.

94 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“Conterno-Fantino’s 2014 Barolos show the vintage at its very best. All four Barolos are marked by ripe, sweet tannin that gives the wines considerable allure and raciness. The 2014s saw approximately 12 days on the skins. Conterno-Fantino gave their historic wines - Vigna del Gris and Sori Ginestra - two years in French oak. Yields are down 25% across the board. The 2014 Barolo Vigna del Gris is deep, unctuous and surprisingly concentrated for this wine, which so often tends to be on the lighter side. The combination of intensely ripe fruit and sweet, ripe tannins gives the Gris its exotic, alluring personality. In 2014, the Gris shows a spiced, balsamic-infused profile that is unusual for this wine. Drink 2020-2034.”

93 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2014 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is a generous and expressive wine that puts forth fleshy dark fruit, red rose and dried lavender. In fact, those floral notes are the wine’s lasting signature, as they are very pronounced in this cooler vintage. Spice, leather and campfire ash follow in close proximity. The best part is the finale that offers crunch, snap and sparkle. Drink 2020-2035.”

93 Points – James Suckling

“The attractive spiced maraschino and red cherries with sweet earthy notes make a classic impression. Quite an assertive tannin chew and a succulent surging acid-fueled finish. Handy wine, which is nicely interpreted. Try from 2022.”

93 Points – Wine & Spirits

“This wine’s flavors of red cherry and strawberry are impressively ripe for the vintage, vibrant with cool acidity that makes those fruit flavors pop. Notes of cayenne pepper and Mexican chocolate add to the wine’s lively personality.”
