Mission Codename 7th Heaven
Opus Pocus!
Today, beloved Operatives, we bring you VINOUS MAGIC.
Not one, not two, but THREE vintages of the wine, the myth, the legend! Including jaw-droppingly rare magnums, all at offensively low prices that you simply will not find elsewhere, guaranteed.
How this day came about blows our little spy minds too. Truthfully. Never thought we’d see enough of these to go around. Still in disbelief as you may prove us wrong. This is an experiment. Can too-much-of-a-good thing really be a thing? Prove us wrong, clean us out. You will be on the winning side.
Although we do get to taste these gems every vintage, we are not pretentious enough to include our own tasting notes as tabulating the scribbles did not amount to much more than a bunch of oohs and aahs, with parental advisory explicit jargon scattered in between. Opus One, as you know, hardly needs any clarifying verbiage other than “ROCKS YOUR FACE OFF”.
No matter your wine budget, or how full your pile, stash, cellar, allocations may be, you NEED these. Like swimming with dolphins, participating in the Gloucester Cheese Run, and releasing baby turtles into the ocean, it’s a bucket list type adventure for your palate. And just think of how hard you can flex on Instagram with one of these bottle shots!
Enough of the razzle dazzle. These are moving faster than free funnel cakes at the county fair. We’ll just drop this from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate quote here:
“Call it a hat trick: Opus One knocks it out of the park with three excellent, if very different, takes on the last string of vintages: 2015, 2016 and 2017.”
And on this new release…
95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2017 Opus One, bottled in July 2019, is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4.5% Merlot and 1% Malbec. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it slowly grows on the nose, revealing compelling notes of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries, warm cassis and blackberry pie with nuances of spice cake, yeast extract, tapenade, licorice and dusty soil with a waft of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lively skip in its step, featuring bags of juicy raspberry and cassis-laced fruit and a refreshing line, supported by ripe, plush tannins, finishing long and graceful. Drink 2021-2036.”
95+ Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“A remarkable wine for the year, the 2017 Opus One is a dense, full-throttle beauty. Plush fruit and soft, silky contours give the 2017 its racy personality. Exotic, beautifully perfumed and impeccable in its balance, Opus One is one of the most complete wines of the vintage. In 2017, Opus One has a distinctly red-toned fruit profile that distinguishes it from the surrounding vintages. Drink 2023-2042.”
95 Points – James Suckling
“Lots of currant and floral notes on the nose. Hints of mint and spice. Medium-to full-bodied, round and savory with creamy, juicy tannins. Hints of citrus underneath. Bright, fresh and delicious. Drink or hold.”
