Mission Codename Turn up the bass
We interrupt your regularly scheduled program for an important message from The President…
… of P.S. I Love You Inc. – the Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization:
“I’m impressed with the many producers of Petite Sirah, both large and small, that have released premium vintages year after year. A toast to the past and future of this great American Varietal!” - Miro Tcholakov, President
Anyone who loves amped up, full bodied, packed and stacked reds, this one’s for you. Half off a straight up, crazy crushable, wicked potent blueberry pie bomb. BOOM!
A stalwart of The Wine Spies for years, Miro Cellars is back, this time with a new Reserve Single Vineyard Petite Sirah. For the new people around here, Miro Cellars is a low-key winery in Sonoma pioneered by, well, our friend Miro Tcholakov. He arrived in Napa to work a harvest in 1990 which spurred a nine-year stint at Dry Creek Vineyard where he moved up to winemaking. Today he makes wine for the storied Trentadue Winery but does his own thing on the side, a small passion project if you will.
We’ve been lucky enough to get on his good side, and he hooks us all up with wildly delicious deals whenever he has a few cases to spare. BUT if light and delicate is your thing, you may want to pass on this one because Miro makes a totally opulent style that holds NOTHING back. In your face fruit! Best of all, because of our longstanding relationship with him, we were able to slash the retail price in half today, just for you, ain’t that nice!
Back in the day, Petite Sirah was the grape to grow in Napa before Cabernet took the throne. Nowadays, modern winemaking has tamed the tannic, rustic edge and great examples like this flash a big, balanced personality with all manner of deep jammy fruit and structure that’s forgiving enough to enjoy young.
In the glass it’s viscous, staining the glass black-blue-purple with no rim to speak of. An explosion of ripe red and black cherries, spiced plum, crushed violets and a subtle note of charcuterie are found on the dark and inviting nose. The palate flashes a mouthful of velvety tannins engulfed in massive fruit - blackberry and blueberry, with Turkish coffee, and cardamom notes. The finish… what finish? It’s still going! A minute into it, aptly balanced blackberry jam continues lingering in shimmering vibrancy. Just. Does. Not. Quit. Wow. This knockout, while perfect to sip alone, is ready to face even the richest of paring challenges.
What a way to start the week! If you love Miro as much as we do, I suggest you move quickly… this simply won’t last!
