Mission Codename First Time For Everything
“If you had to choose one Zinfandel to showcase Dry Creek Valley, it’s this one… pricey, but sets a benchmark for Zinfandel.” - Wine Enthusiast
They called us crazy. They said it didn’t exist. But after years of hunting, we finally got our hands on a mythical creature even more elusive than Bigfoot. That’s right - it only took 12 years of working with Deerfield Ranch Winery to bring you the legendary Buchignani-Garcia Old Vine Zinfandel. Just like Bigfoot, this wine disappears faster than you can grab your camera and take a blurry photo. But after pleading, groveling, and generally prostrating ourselves, we managed to do the impossible and secure a few cases of Deerfield’s most sought-after mega-bombshell of a Zin.
Deerfield fans know, this wine goes fast every year. Just make more you say? Not possible. This single-vineyard Zinfandel is made from vines so old, each gnarly truck only gifts us a few scraggly clusters of heavenly grapes mana. This wine puts the “cult” in extreme viticulture. Jojo Garcia dry farms this 4th generation plot, driving his tractor at crazy angles around every single vine, breaking up the roots and making them dive down to reach the water. These stressed-out old vines, thinking it’s the end of the world, put all their energy into the next generation - the fruit that bears those precious seeds. Little do they know there’s a crazy ape named Robert Rex (master winemaker for Deerfield) that’s going to be making alcoholic grape juice out of every single berry.
So what’s the big deal about this wine? It’s an iron fist in a velvet glove. Robert Rex calls it the “martini effect” - his slow fermentation process creates a cocoon of phenolic compounds surrounding the alcohol molecules, just like a vermouth takes the heat off the gin in a martini. Translation: Giant tasty fruit bomb exploding on the palate without any collateral damage. So damn flavorful. A deep ruby near throughout with excellent clarity transitioning to a dark, blood red core. Replete with its signature gingerbread and vanilla, there’s a wonderful scent of fresh-baked french bread behind the big red fruit and bramble. Explosive berry profile on the palate full of boysenberry and blackberries. Beautiful baking spice and cinnamon notes warm it up. Impressively smooth for packing such a punch, it’s not until it slides down your throat that you realize it’s high octane. It will stack up to just about anything you through at it, but a nice blackened tri-tip would be ideal.
You’re lucky to see Bigfoot once in your life. We doubt we’ll ever see this wine again - don’t miss your chance to stock up at this rarity for nearly 50% off.
