Mission Codename Power Stroke
When we sold the 2016 vintage of this potent little fruit bomb rarely have we ever had so many reorder requests since. Today Cerro returns for a well-deserved WIA on the even better 2017, at an EVEN LOWER PRICE, slipping it under $20, just unbelievable.
It not only packs that same 6.7L Power Stroke V8 type of raw power as its predecessor but also layers in even more oomph.
Fans of light, delicate reds please look away! We could not be more blown away by the sheer opulence and pure over-the-top Californian style on display here. Showy and without any sense of shyness or reservation - calling it a Special Second Selection seems appropriate.
That makes sense actually, because owner Derek Beitler is the nephew of Caymus founder Chuck Wagner, and he basically grew up in the cellar there, honing his craft over the years. Eventually, he headed up two insanely successful labels - Carne Humana and Skyhook - both of which deliver a similar balance of power, quality, and value. Now he’s pushing the envelope again with Cerro.
An inky, dark pour hints at what’s to come – which is a PROFOUNDLY concentrated and lavish wine that MUST be tasted. The blend changes from year to year, and this one checks in with 50% Petit Verdot, 40% Petite Sirah and 10% Zinfandel. The depth of hyper-ripe explosive fruit can hardly be described - all manner of blackberry jam and blueberry cobbler, baked plum, Ghirardelli cocoa nibs and licorice flood your palate with mouthcoating opulence. It’s rich like Warren Buffet, with a chewy and dense body and enough complexity to keep even the most jaded connoisseur interested. In short, it’s a total treat for anyone who loves that unabashedly hedonistic “California” style red - for a price that’s almost unimaginable.
After the resounding popularity of the 2016, we aren’t sure how long this will last, but we are sure it will not fare the better half of the day. If you like ripe, rockin’ red blends this will BLOW YOUR MIND!
