Mission Codename Hush now
If we’re being honest as usual, your average Californian Viognier is often insipid, oily, thick, and smells like a Sephora store, then falls apart with the first sip.
So, you might hate it. Or you think you do at least. And we bet a lot of you have not ever tried it.
We are here to flip the script. Because this one. It’s the $#!T. No kidding. Imagine the best über-crisp with a vein of acidity that keeps it from turning into a flabby sack. CRAZY notes of honeysuckle flowers and tangerine peel. Lemongrass and crushed minerals. Sweet tropical fruit lingers underneath it all. Should you be in need of a white that fires on all food pairing cylinders, drive this one home.
This one will reshape your perceptions for the better and set a new high water mark. It’s PEAK Viognier, in a class by itself.
Speaking of class, you may recall our Vernay Day last month and their stunning Condrieu, 100% Viognier at $240 a pop, and how collectors cleaned us out our entire allocation despite that ticket of entry. Well, this too is 100% Viognier, and you can ‘Steele’ (pun intended) more than a case of it with that budget.
It comes to us from Jed Steele. He’s been making wine since 1968 when he kicked things off at Stony Hill Vineyard in Napa, crafting some of the most age-worthy whites in the history of California. Jed Steele MADE history as a pioneering Rhône Ranger to play with these grapes back in the day, no wonder he knows what it takes to get Viognier right, fickle as it may be.
When you do something, anything, for 50+ years consistently you get pretty darn good at it. Of course, it helps when you are a doppelganger as the head winemaker for Kendall-Jackson with access to some of the best fruit in the region. Jed is intimately connected with Sonoma Valley, having farmed all over it for over 30 years. That includes the famous Durell Vineyard and Parmelee Hill, to name a few…
Steele gets the big scores with a lot of their wines, yet somehow their Viognier has yet to be discovered by the winepress, which inevitably helped us get this crazy deal for you, so - SSHH!
Stuff all you can afford into your cart and check out quietly before the ABC - Anything But Chardonnay - secret society wipes us out.
