Mission Codename Rock juice
The last Sancerre we featured vaporized in front of our eyes before we could get to the limestone bit. We hope this one will move a tad slower so that we can share our geekdom with more Operatives…
There’s Sauvignon Blanc, and then there’s Sancerre. Just like a Grand Cru Burgundy vs. any random Chardonnay, the grape variety is the only common denominator. Put this up blind against ANY SB from anywhere else in the world, and its “Sancerre-ity” will dominate and conquer, guaranteed.
And that’s even before explaining why this ain’t your daddy’s by the overpriced glass Sancerre either.
This is SB on steroids, no doubt. Pure old vine (50+ years) single-vineyard bliss grown on Terre Blanche, soils unmatched elsewhere, famous for imparting that unmistakable depth of minerality. Supercharged with ripeness, intensity, rocks, barrels, and passion. The $45 a bottle you would otherwise see this at on a shelf if it wasn’t for the keen eye and bargaining agility, is nothing, to be brutally honest, in the face of how singular a liquid you’re getting in this bottle. We simply ran out of hyperbole to properly convey our infinite excitement when bringing this to you for just $20.
The color shows the slightest advancement, with a brilliant pale copper-gold sheer and hay accents. The first whiff is enough to blow minds, with crushed wet stones, passionfruit, nectarine, Granny Smith, and an intriguing backdrop of freshly chopped poblano. The palate makes you wonder about that deft touch of oak spice buried in intense acidity overlaying the sublime fruit notes that cover tropical, citrus, stone, and even the berry kind. The extraction is so over the top that the wine clings to your palate for minutes and echoes a begging call for more. Until the last drop, way before that flawless roasted rosemary citrus chicken makes it out of the oven for a picture-perfect missed pairing opportunity.
Sadly, here’s the math. Only 7 barrels were bottled at the winery. 4 of those were already drunk at top Michelin star restaurants around the globe way before the pandemic. The rest was destined to swanky wine shops, and about 1-2 of those barely remained when we got the deal. Since the small pile of boxes landed, and every time we get thirsty, we’ve been visiting that pile too, slapping each other’s hands to save you all we could…
So don’t you blame us when we run out today!
