Castello di Fonterutoli has a rich history of making wine in the heart of Tuscany. The estate has been in the hands of the Mazzei family since 1435!! That’s 26 generations of uninterrupted winemaking folks.
Predominantly Sangiovese spiked with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, all sourced from some of the very best blocks in their estate vineyards. Remember, 2016 was an EPIC vintage that Antonio Galloni coined “A Modern Day Benchmark”. That makes this one of their best wines in 600 years!
Really, the Concerto is a pioneering Super Tuscan in these parts, made since the 1981 vintage. It’s at the perfect intersection of modernity and tradition.
Dark cherry red (just like the room-filling perfume emanating) with reflections of crimson and carmine. The nose offers up kirsch, seeped plums, pomegranate molasses, exotic spices, rose petals, and cloves are some of the other exotic notes here. Deep, rich, and voluptuous on the palate all at once, while also classically focused with silky tannins and pulsating acidity. Seriously endowed and prolonged, this vivid, gorgeous red shows saline notes on the long, minerally finale.
A superstar like this deserves a special pairing. How about a Muffuletta Panzanella we thought, for a pairing with this complex beauty - the ultimate Tuscan bread salad with tomatoes, olives, salami, and mmm - mozzarella.
Did we say the best price in the US? No, make that the WORLD!

95 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate’s blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. 2016 is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it. Drink 2022-2041.”
94-95 Points – James Suckling
“The density and intensity of fruit with blackberry and dark chocolate is impressive. Full body, polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. So beautiful. A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.”
94 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 225-liter French oak for 18 months. The Cabernet Sauvignon element comes through nicely with dark fruit, spice and some grilled herb. The grape gives the wine a heavier and more concentrated center of gravity. However, the soul and style of the wine is driven by the freshness and delicate aromas of the Sangiovese. Drink 2019-2035.”
