Mission Codename A-mazz-ing
“The secret is gorgeous grapes. We have amazing vineyards.” - Antoine Favero, Winemaker
MAZZOCCO. If you know, you know.
Round 2 of yet another incredible Wine Spies deal has landed. This isn’t just any Mazzocco, but the RESERVE bottling - one that many people on allocation waiting lists still cannot access. Unless you roll with us. Because we have the shortcut, the backdoor, the insider trade. At nearly HALF price no less! It sure pays to have close friends in the industry.
You’ll recall, Mazzocco is one of the most popular of the Wilson Artisan Wineries, a portfolio HUGE in popularity, locally and nationally, stacking best of this, best of that awards year after year since their humble beginnings in the early 1990s. With wines scoring 90+ points with Wine Spectator and that impeccable track record of literally hundreds of Gold Medals from competitions, they are unrivaled, just like their other acclaimed sister properties - Wilson Family, Matrix, Pezzi King, Rockpile, to name a few.
Serious Zin lovers ADORE Mazzocco. They jump at the chance to score any of the select few small production Reserves. Champagne-born winemaker Antoine Favero has been at the helm here since 2005, sharpening his reputation on Zinfandel. The San Francisco Chronicle who gave this an easy Double Gold medal, raves that “though big, powerful, and uniformly high in alcohol, Favero’s Zins manage to maintain lusciousness and nuance not often found in the varietal.”
BIG, jammy and ripe - just how you like it. This combines 98% Zin, 6% of which is the Primitivo clone, and a smidge of Cabernet Sauvignon for fun. The antithesis of a wimpy wine, it’s pumped full of throbbing brambly fruit. Huckleberry, black cherry, and raspberry - heck it’s like a fragrant mixed berry pie in a bottle. Throw in a little vanilla, chewy toffee, Cuban coffee, and a little sweet spice, too. For us, this is the ultimate summer BBQ wine and a sure-fire crowd-pleaser.
A gaggle of thirsty Operatives scooped every one of a 2017 Reserve a while back.
Don’t let this one slip away!
