Mission Codename Tilting at windmills

“Oh. My. God. Becky… look at that grape. It’s just so big…

Uh, I can’t believe it’s just so round!”

BIG. ROUND. And JUICY. Can a wine be bootylicious?? Yes. It can. If you like that kind of wine, you 1000% NEED this experience. However, if you like thin, wimpy, dainty little reds (we need to talk), then pass on this one.

We know how much you loved those Jacob Franklin Petites, and quite honestly, as good as they were, this is next level stuff. If you haven’t had a Petite Sirah epiphany yet, here’s your ticket to a Mad Max type experience that mentally and physically transports you into that eye-popping, awe-inspiring realm you never knew existed.

Where do we start with this one? The winemaker - Aaron Pott. A master with worldly winemaking experience from France to Napa, whose resume includes Quintessa, Blackbird, Seven Stones, Perliss, and his own Pott label, with countless 95-100-pointer hits.

Or the location - Stags Leap District. Primetime sweet spot in the heart of Napa Valley where some of the absolute best fruit comes from. This property is so special that winemakers before and after Pott are David Ramey and Philippe Melka. Oh! And the score - can’t forget that. 95 points. Honestly, to us, this tastes like a solid 96+ but whatever. You be the judge.

The winery - Quixote, a longstanding fixture in Napa, and a monumental architectural masterpiece too. Unless you’re on the mailing list or visit them in person, you don’t really see their wines in the wild. They focus on three varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petite Sirah. That’s it. They picked a lane and went all in. You’ll see what we mean when you taste it.

Some of the social hype we saw include such forthright testimonials as: “you will be amazed” and “overwhelming winner” and “loss for words” and “drinkable is an understatement.” One sip and you’ll understand why. It’s inky and dark, with blackberry jam, chocolate drizzled blueberries, sweet cedar, and vanilla wrapped in a robe of toasty rich oak. Incredibly saturating, plush, and mouthcoating with a finish that doesn’t quit. A meal in itself, but you could whip up some garlic butter steak tips or a hearty braised rib pappardelle pasta to stand up to this big boy.

Wait! The price! Nearly HALF OFF, down from $85 to $45. Goodness, way to bury the lede huh?

But listen. It’s not all whimsical kittens and rainbows. We got all the cases we could but there’s not enough. Will go in a flash so move quick!

95 Points – Robert Parker

“The 2014 Petite Sirah comes from a vineyard considered one of the finest in all of California for this variety. Made with the consultancy of Aaron Pott, this inky blue/purple wine has phenomenal intensity, a massive mouthfeel, relatively high tannins, but extraordinary purity of blue and blackberry fruit, white flowers and forest floor. There is a touch of pepper as well. This is set for a life of 40-50 years and I wouldn’t touch it for at least 5-6. Drink 2021-2072.”
